CLIMATE
It has been said that Mpumalanga has the weather that California thinks
it has with its year round sunshine.
Summer runs from October to March and things get hot but with reduced
humidity owing to the 2,000ft altitude. The main rainfall occurs during
these months and you may have the opportunity to witness one of the
spectacular storms.
Winter months (April to September) bring cooler evenings with temperatures
dropping to around 13°C but warm sunny days with temperatures reaching
30°C on a hot day.
SECURITY
The golf estate is surrounded by an electric security fence and in
addition provides guards 24-hours a day. Although most house owners
on the estate do not consider an alarm necessary the house itself has
a full security system including 2 panic alarms connected to the local
Chubb office.
In our experience, by South African standards Nelspruit is very safe
however we would recommend using basic common sense as far as personal
safety is concerned.
For any other security concerns please refer to the Foreign and Commonwealth
Office website.
MALARIA AND OTHER HEALTH ISSUES
Nelspruit is not a malarial area however should you choose
to visit Kruger National Park you will be entering a Malaria area and
appropriate precautions should be taken.
We would recommend you visit your local Practice Nurse or Travel Health
Clinic for advice prior to travelling to South Africa.
Water
Tap water is safe to drink.
GETTING THERE
To Johannesburg
British Airways, South African Airways and Virgin offer nightly return
flights to Johannesburg (direct) from London Heathrow. You may wish
to research cheaper alternatives including a new charter service from
Stansted.
To Nelspruit
Nelspruit is 3½ hours easy drive from Johannesburg Airport.
Should you wish to fly from Johannesburg to Nelspruit our local airport
is Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA). There are regular
connecting flights from Johannesburg to KMIA. This is 20 minutes drive
from the house.
Car Hire
However you choose to get to Nelspruit a car is essential to get here
from either airport and to get around. Public Transport is not that
of the UK though there are local taxi services.
Most major car hire companies operate from both airports.
